Just randomly, most of the time

For the merfolk, I pick Greek names that I like the sound of; for the elves, I usually pick Celtic names that I like; and for the dwarfs, I use Norse names. But, beyond that, there isn't much of a system.
(And, even then, there are exceptions. For example, 'Lydia' is of Greek origin, so she should really be a mermaid, not an elf. But, she has a Greek name because she was adopted by the merfolk at a young age!)

Probably because he's so much fun to play. I enjoy having him boss the other characters around, but I also enjoy getting him into clumsy accidents when he oversteps the bounds of his authority
